Jimny Gearbox wanted?

Hello all,

Before I start, please forgive me as I have very little car knowledge and I'm really just looking for some advice or direction.

I have a 2005 Suzuki JIMNY JLX S/T which has recently been driving poorly. It started with some screeching noise on start up which would last a little while but would be on and off while driving. Then a week ago I wasn't able to shift gears.

I took it to a gearbox specialist who confirmed that the gearbox is in bad shape (as well as something to do with the clutch?) And has advised me to not drive it. They have sent me away to find a gearbox which they will be happy to fit for me but cannot supply themselves.

In a nutshell, this is my last attempt to get this sorted before I will probably have to scrap and get a new car. I have been searching online but can't find any straight answers or gearboxes. I've registered for a few spare part websites who have given me some parts but really I dont know what im looking for!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading :)

I may get corrected, but it should be an R72 you need. However, a good one seems to be expensive, and going for the older R7ME box / manual transfer is not a route I would recommend if not going to run bigger tyres.

Hi,
£900 to £950 will get you a reconditioned gearbox without too much of a search, try google with "Jimny R72 Gearbox". One company even had them in stock.
Expensive yes, but the quick route.
Alternatively try Ebay / Gumtree and "Breaking Jimny", you will have some phone numbers to try or look for a complete vehicle being sold for scrap due to rust.

Good luck in your search.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

Screeching is usually the clutch thrust bearing, once it wears out (can collapse) then you can't get the car in to gear as the clutch no longer works.

You might find the gearbox is OK, unless your mechanic has already taken it off.

As Mike says eBay and breakers will be able to supply a new gearbox, a quick look suggests £250-£900.
A new clutch and bearing will be a lot less, but there is a bit of labout, usually the engine is separated from the gearbox to change.

I did find this post, interesting reading....
