No idea if Suzuki have any intent on EV's, least of all a Jimny.

But a recent experience has got me thinking.

Now, I'm no EV fan-boy, but nor am I against them. Although I personally don't believe the infrastructure will ever really exist to support them. I do however think electronic drive is likely the future (just with some means of generating electricity on-board, rather than relying on heavy batteries and external charging).

The reason for this train of thought was a recent MINI promotion, whereby they were offering 24hr test drives in the new MINI Electric.

I took them up on the offer, to which you can see more here:

But it got me thinking, the driveline from the MINI would be completely awesome in something like the Jimny. Not sure if it would still need a transfer box for low or if enough regen braking is available from the motor with a single speed gearbox to match the same off road engine braking of low range.

But that sort of performance and ability would be very nice in the Jimny. And of course solve the stupid EU emissions problem with the low Co2 and fairly clean 1.5 petrol currently used.

IMO hydrogen is the future. None of the Japanese companies are jumping full on onto the EV bandwagon. I reckon in ten years time owning an EV could be the equivalent of being stuck with a Betamax VCR.

On the Worcester Birmingham Canal in Edgbaston, adjacent to the University is a narrow boat powered by hydrogen. It has been moored up for over 10 years and is now covered with green mould and looking very sorry for itself.

Maybe it needs a bit/lot more development.

Love ICE cars and the engine/gearbox has always played a key part in all my buying decisions.
However, 48 hours in an ETron surprised me. The relentless linear silent power incredibly seductive. Range and charging time the only downside.
All these EV’s are just too heavy. A Taycan weighs more than a full fat Range Rover. NUTS!
In the absence of a massive Investment in EV charging infrastructure, the answer has to be hydrogen.
