Quick one on breathers,

My understanding is that most people fit a seperate hose to each component, diff x2, tx box, gx box, which means you have 4 lines going up to the engine bay.  I was thinking about putting using one hose, starting at the rear diff, then when it gets to the tx box, using a 3 way connector, plugging in the tx box and then continuing the line up to the gx box and doing the same thing for that and the front diff. That would mean that only one hose went up to the engine bay.   Has anyone else done it this way?  If not, is there any particular reason you didn't go down this route?

I would have thought the less joints the better along the lines, just in case one comes loose?

True, I've never used those air line fittings before, not sure how robust they are. I don't suppose the hose takes up much space when it's all tie-wrapped together anyway.

I'm not sure if that's the best idea, while it does work, if enough water does enter into the single line, all your components would be screwed. This is hypothetical and will probably only introduce water into one component but it's something to think about. Separate hoses for each component would be best. Feel free to correct me if I'm chatting rubbish :DD

As others already pointed out it's a good idea to have a continuous line without any joints. You could build either with or without joints that's just a secondary question. The most important in my opinion to use proper kit like one here:

Or if you want a kit, I have them in my store

Don't use rubbish like garden hoses and clamps, stick with the proper stuff!

I actually offer both types mentioned above, but prefer to hav all lines going back to a manifold block -

Thanks Gents,

I thought it might be a bit of a daft question as noone else has done it that way.  The only reason I thought of it was to tidy up the run of lines going back to the engine bay.  I just don't like a messy cable run.  But it looks like I'll just have to find a way of making them all neat.

Another question tho, when running the line up to the snorkel head, is that done via the airbox or seperately up the outside of the snorkel?  I'm assuming its the latter to avoid any contamination in the engine intake.

Up the side of the snorkel ;)

it would be possible using one of my breather port brackets (I.e. drill a hole in the top of a side of the air filter box and use the bulkhead filter port through the air box side) but "best practice" is to take the end of the breather port as high as possible...

Here's mine on the Boogie -

LOL please send me a pic if you ever go into water where it is covering your bonnet for a period. Not just a splash going over the bonnet. Pretty sure you going to happily float anyway by that time. :)

Also by that time the diifs have completely cooled off and all "sucking air" has taken place and if water do go into breather point intake by that time at dash height it is not going to be so much.

I am pretty sure that you wil not even get to this point 99,999999999999% even when you seriously offroad 24/7, where the breather end point at highest point under bonnet.

I have also made made the end point to create a natural water / air ock at the end point. Let me try and find a pic for you.

Never ever I am going to have that pipe fitted on outside of snorkel :) but yeah each person have their own preferences.

This is my setup on my previous gen 4.

www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread....f-breather-for-rebel

.

These are how I made the ends (see pics below). If water ever push up so high the water will be locked off as the intake is lower then the curve above. (Think empty bottel put upside down in bucket of water. Water will not fill into bottle)

Also by this tiime the diffs have cooled and any air sucking would have been finished in process of diff cooling..

When traversing such deep water you would have stopped, switch off vehicle. Walked the water crossing as per good 4x4 practice to know what you entering and how deep water is. In South africa back country we cross lots of rivers but here it sort of standard practice to walk any water you cross first where you see it might be deeper than 1-2 feet. So by the time you walked the water your diffs are long cooled anyway. (Water crossings i refer to is where you cannot see the depth or gauge it, i am not revering to streams here were you can see clearly it is only 1 feet deep). That way diff breathers are anyway much higher just under the bonnet.

The below has never let me down ever.

This is not critizing your breather in any way but merely a discussion on how I differ in opinion and what I know worked for me. So this is not negative criticism.

Might also need a roof mounted radio for that sort of carry on :D
