The worktops in my workshop have seen better days so I am looking at 2 layers of 18mm plywood topped with a decent laminate.

Unless you guys can point me in another diection?

I have tried kitchen worktops but the laminates are invariably cheap and nasty.

My side bench is 25mm block board and seems to take the abuse. My main bench is just plywood and covered in welding burns and gouge marks and everything but it's sacrificial so I don't care. The base is 3x6 tanalised posts glued and bolted together with threaded bar. If I had the headroom to swing it would take a full overhead blow from my big sledgehammer.

Mine are covered in galvanized sheet steel simply fixed down with wood screws. I don't matter what's underneath, cheap and strong is all you need, the top is indestructible.

Hi Roger,
I use 1.5mm that I get cut to manageable sizes at a local metal firm. I have one stand alone small bench that I build engines on, that's 3mm thick, but the wood below is a very thin, so I am over compensating with this one....

I use 3mm sheet metal on top of 18mm OSB. Easy to clean, durable and suitable for hot works.
