I bought some Bilstein shock absorbers from jimny style without the springs as I didn't need the car to be lifted and all the insurance issues it would bring plus I don't plan to go off-road.

They have just been fitted and I must say the car handles much better. It is much less bouncier and I have much more confidence on fast A roads. The car doesn't wobble as much when I shake it side to side and I don't need to really slow down for speed bumps.

For the people who are looking for the Jimny to handle a bit more like a road car I would certainly recommend the upgrade. It is also a bit cheaper than getting a lift kit fitted and you don't have to mess around with brake lines etc. Something tells me that any decent dampers will do the trick so you don't have to go with jimny style.

Happy to answer questions.

I've always been a fan of Bilsteins and here Jimny Style have done the work finding the right ones to fit. Good choice. Chris

You sound like a politician, ok, so here goes: May we have the Part Numbers please and a photo of them on the car?
Yesterday I drove on an old main road (Morley Drive,WA) and the suspension was terrible, I could easily isolate the feedback from the tyres compared with the shocks, the tyres are sweet, Lhs 22psi, Rhs22.5psi, No TPMS. :)

If I can find a set near the Service Department this morning, I may be able to drive home with them this afternoon! ;)

This is interesting as l have found the suspension to be excellent on our new Jimny, the way it handles the poor road surfaces round here is remarkable considering the small size of the vehicle.

However l am always up for suggestions to improve it so would be willing to try the Bilstein dampers on the Jimny. But l am not sure what improvements l would be hoping for, perhaps the ideal would be adjustable dampers such as the 4-way adjustable ones l have on my Defender.

They can be set to soft for poor roads/off road use and progressively harder for "fast" road use if needed, which stops the Land Rover getting out of shape if it hits a pothole mid corner.

But l will say it again, l am impressed by the standard suspension on the Jimny, l wasn't expecting it to do so well on poor tarmac after reading various road tests where it was described as a "bucking bronco" on poor roads.

l would imagine it gets out of shape if you try to drive it like a GTi, but that's not going to happen with us. Although l might give it a go for a laugh and see what happens.

The stock setup seems to be OK, until you have replaced it with some decent shocks and coils and realise how bad it actually was.

Having put time and effort into exploring the potential of a Jimny as a grip car for road and track I would suggest that any money spent on upmarket dampers is money well spent. For anything more than pottering about well below the speed limit the standard dampers are simply too slow witted. They just don't offer enough control for rapid direction change on irregular surfaces like the common British country back road with the expected result of making the car feel nervous and the driver back off. However the Jimny is actually a very capable chassis for tight twisted roads if you give it the benefit of some higher quality dampers that work properly even when you are working them hard.

Totally agree. The standard setup is fine for around town at lower speeds but the dive under braking at anything over 30mph or when emergency braking caught me by surprise a couple of times.

Sorry if I sound like a politician but I've been a member of this forum and have had my car since Feb and have followed many threads on lifts etc. I thought I could bring some clarity because the topic is well worn.

As for why I went for the ones on the jimny style website, well I just couldn't find any alternatives. Everything seemed to be part of a lift kit but if you can find different brands I'm sure they will make the same difference. A lift kit is also double the price fitted and I don't ever go off road.

Have a look here, they aren't cheap so do your research but for me they have made the car more stable over speed and less bouncy.

Thank you for the reply, I had a look at the link below, the price was more than I expected.
Ah well, its only money, I just contacted my local importer, they are not sold here just yet.
I appreciate your feedback of their performance.

Most of the bigger names do something for a standard height Jimny with some degree of improvement on the factory. Trailmaster comfort or sport, Monroe Adventure, Bilstine b6, AVO adjustable to name a few. You may be paying more than genuine parts price but you will be getting something worth having.

Lambert, as you are a tarmac expert, have a look at what I was offered earlier today, no price down here yet.

H&R 28678-2 ;) (no links, just google)

That's coming up as a 45mm lowering set with koni heavy track dampers. Expect that to be very firm and go round corners like a mk1 escort 1300 in clubman spec. An absolute blast as a weekend toy but a bit tiresome for the commute. Very similar to my track setup. H&R have a well deserved quality reputation especially in German modified circles.
