Also a response from Front Runner, conveniently avoiding directly answering my question:

ETA I followed up this email asking what the safe load was in kg and again they couldn't give a direct answer so I think it's safe to say the safe load for a front runner slimline rack on a Gen 4 Jimny is approximately 3kg.

The insurance company, the police and the court will definitely believe what Suzuki say regardless of what our personal experience may be.

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

I haven't told you what I believe. I've shared the information given to me by Suzuki.

Slightly unrelated to roof tents, but I noticed that ARB have a new 'Base' rack system available. The larger of the two suitable for the Gen4 weighs in at 17.1kg, which is 10kg lighter than the similar sized Frontrunner model. I think you may need to add the weight of the feet to that, but should still give far more usable load capacity.

Personally I think roof tents are daft. They usually take nearly as long to setup as a ground tent (there are exceptions), they are heavy, take up all your roof space, they are cold, you have to climb up a ladder, awkward to get changed in, and you have to pack it up if you want to use the vehicle.

Why not just get a reasonable sized ground tent and camp comfortably. But if you are insistent on having a roof tent, fit heavy duty coils to handle the extra load.

It was quite amusing in Botswana when elephants walked through the camp, then all the European tourists were too scared to walk and all had to pack away their roof tents and awnings, so they could drive to the ablutions.

One of those presumably young ladies in customer services actually told me, when questioned about the anti-perforation warranty, that the chassis was considered as part of the exhaust system. Bless.
When questioned about the roof load, she repeated that the [Suzuki brand] roof bars are rated at 30kg and had no other info.
When I see something in writing from Suzuki Japan, I might believe it (although the dealer that serviced my car told me that the manual is out of date (and that came from Japan). I wonder which one is right?

Well Bill, it seems you are choosing to believe whatever suits you. I gave examples in another thread of other roof rack manufacturers not associated with Suzuki that stipulate a 30kg limit for the Gen4. I'm not sure why somebody selling a product would deliberately limit their products for one particular vehicle and not others that use the same components, unless of course there was a good reason.

Maybe this Australian manufacturers was mislead by the same young ladies? www.rhinorack.com/en-au/products/roof/ro...bar-roof-rack_ja0631

This is just a guess, but perhaps they asked the vehicle manufacturer? Isit a coincidence that all the sources I've quoted have given exactly the same 30kg figure?
Here's another one: www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel3.php?...e=roofbar&query=8656

As you say, just a guess. Or maybe the absence of any manufacturer data led them to use the old number.
