EGR valve advice

My wife owns a Jimny VVT late 2006 model.
She recently experienced the engine coughing and spluttering and Almost cutting out on occasion.
Local garage ran diagnostics and came to the conclusion it was the EGR valve at fault and either needed cleaning, blanking off or replacing!
The clean or the blanking off doesn't seem to have worked because she is still having issues (all be it not quite as bad) with the car coughing and spluttering. It looks like maybe we need a new EGR? This is an expensive option £420 fitted we've been quoted! Any advice please before we spend even more money?

It's a tricky one this as some symptoms of a failing EGR valve can also be produced by ignition and sensor faults, most of which don't cause a diagnostic code or engine light. If the garage has come to this conclusion via a specific fault code then it's likely they are correct, but I have never seen anyone mention a EGR fault code during my time on the forum. That's the problem, EGR failure appears to be not a common fault on the Suzuki engine, usually it's electrical.

Have you asked them why they think it's the EGR valve, they must have a reason?

EGR problems are more common in high performancs engines (increased flow) and far less common in a low state of tune Jimny. Of course they could be right, but sensors and a cleaned idle valve are relatively cheap. Chris
