Evening guys,
Im looking at and have looked at a few 2005 onto 2008 jimnys, what would you guys consider high miles for these little 1.3vvt engines...
And do 2005 onwards come with remote locking as standard...

I sold my non-VVT with 140,000 miles on the clock several years ago. Probably one of the most reliable engines I ever owned. Cranked first time every time. Never a hint of misbehaviour.

I don't even think there's a generally accepted weak point; unlike the head gasket on the old Rover K series; I think the M13 engines seem to be pretty reliable from everyone experience. They also had a remarkably long production run with early examples appearing in 2000 and including vvt after 2005 until 2018/2019 when the Jimny 4 came along.

That said, I'm sure uncared and abused versions will give trouble, so use your head.

Welcome to the forum.

The issue with the age range you are looking at is the manual gearbox not the engine. Between 2005 and 2009 they used unsealed bearings in the main gearbox and these suffered from oil starvation. After 2009 they went to sealed type bearings and they are fine.

As for mileage my 2011 is on 95500 well serviced farm miles and is perfectly happy.

Oh and the service interval is every 9 thousand miles for oils and filters. All the service information is available from the wiki section at the top of the page.

What about pre 2005 with the second stick,
What bothers me most is rust, ive looked at pre 2005 before now and there shocking underneath..
The last 2005 i looked at was mint underneath but the clutch was rediculasly high on the biting point..
I tried to factor in a new clutch with the asking price but the guy just kept knocking me back saying its not slipping or doing anything it shouldnt do, and he was right but i see a few months and it needs a clutch..
I can't stretch to a 2009..
Ive got about £2600 and like most its a second car / toy to get out where i can't go in the car...

Also would an early pre 2005 box fit if i had a box failure or post 2009 as there seems to be plenty parts about

One option is the automatic. They don't have the same bearing issues.

The early box will kinda fit but it's a bit of a job not least because it's ratios are different.

The thing with that budget is going to be buying simply on condition.

I have one of each and the auto is in every respect equal to the manual but for being less frantic when really pushing it on road. It's just less hectic which is great 90pc of the time.

Not many about though ive just been looking,,
Whats the main thing to lookout for on the manual 2005 to 2009 gearbox wise, do they leak oil or is it an internal issue...?
Can the box be stripped and rebuilt possably with updated seals that known to cause the problem...?
