Hi guys, having an issue with the 4wd. when selecting 4wd it doesn't engage straight away, you have to really wrestle with it for about 5 minutes for it to finally engage which I'm presuming is a problem with the vacuum lines. The real issue is when I'm driving along normally on the road, to say work and back, it'll start making a loud grinding kinda noise which the only way to shut it up is by slowing down on the side of the road. To me it's like the front wheels are trying to engage without me selecting it. Anyone know what this could be? Cheers

I think you have hit the nail on the head with vacuum hubs being at fault. You can either modify them into the permanent engaged position and rely on the transfer box alone for 4x4 shifting or you can convert to manual hubs. Chasing and fixing the vacuum is a painful process that potentially is just as expensive as the manual conversion.

The repair of the vacuum system has got more infamy than it really deserves. I have already repaired four Jimnys with vacuum system issues and only my own was a major hassle to diagnose (faulty wheel bearing without any symptoms).

Yes, the repair of the vacuum system can be a nightmare. But it can also be straightforward and simple, depending on what is wrong with it. I think that the wiki contains a lot of useful guidance to aid toward the simple side.
