Annual test day today, passed ok!

Few "minors"

Two bulbs, which were working last night, were dead. Swift bash sorted them.
Both rear wheel bearings have slight play (new last year, only 600 miles on-road driven, no off-road)
Panhard bushes showing slight play
Brake hose contacts body occasionally
Steering box needs slack removing.
Winch electric cables insecure (rubbing radiator mount)

So some new panhard bushes on order. Some cable tying needed on the brake hose and winch power
Leave the wheel bearings a little bit longer (after a possible off-road trip over Christmas)

Nice to have for another 12 months.

I would forget about the rear bearings till the next mot unless you think its an issue.
MOTs advisory comments are just a way of covering the MOT testers a"se these days i.e If in any doubt put it down in writing.
Have a tiger 800 motorbike which had an advisory on the front tyre (crazing or similar) one year, next year it was square profile on rear tyre, last year it passed no advisories. Thing is its still on the same tyres and I take it to the same MOT station, figure that out
Hoping our first MOT with our Jimny will be a good one. Does not drive like anything is wrong, so looking for a 1st time pass. Jan the 7th is d day.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

My relationship with my MOT station is good. He tends to offer advisories on the understanding I will fix them rather than fail the car.

For the rear wheel bearing it was a "keep an eye" on them advice so thats fine.

Last year he said he didnt want to see the tyres that were on it at the time ever again. They were date stamped in 2005 and had lots of flint cuts and sidewall perishing. So it was a fair call and new boots were ordered.

I see several people struggle with rear wheel bearings..

If you used it only onroad, i really dont understand what can kill them that quickly? Any thoughts?

So wheel weight, is youre take on it then i guess?
Diameter shouldnt do any change, but weight and high negative offset would increase bearing load some.

Then again, alot of patrol and Jeep guys run 38-42" without any huge bearing issues.

Only 600 miles is absurd, and atleast 50 times less than i would expect from any car.
I would expect 600miles hard offroading from a new bearing, if you pack the outside with grease to seal it some.
Has to be more than just wheel dimension causing this?!

Thing is, the bearing is small. Jeep ones are probably tougher

Some bearings nowadays are shocking quality and there’s even fakes knocking about.

These are premium quality, just pushed to extremes

32" wheels onroad, is not even close to what i would call pushed to extreme.

600 miles is a month of driving for most of us, even with 32" wheels i would expect 20-30k miles onroad.
I`m suprised you accept this as normal.
It sure will keep me away from bigger than 29" wheels if i must expect changing bearings 8-12 times a year.

I've just looked back at my build thread on this very fine forum...

I last fitted all new bearings in mid-May this year, since then we've done -

A day's laning in North Wales at the end of May
A weekend's laning in the Lake District in Mid July (there and back and around and around)
Another day's laning in North Wales again in August
Another weekend's laning in the Northumberland in early September (there and back and around and around)
In September the MOT pulled up an oil leak rear nearside but that was found to be an ill-fitted oil seal
A day trip laning in the Lake District in early October (there and back and around and around)
Another day's laning in North Wales again in mid November

That must be well over 600 miles, and some nice rough gnarly greelaning to boot...?
