Disadvantages of an engine air intake snorkel

What would the disadvantages of having an air intake snorkel be?

The first one is obviously irreversibly altering a front side fender panel.

But I am thinking what about "wind drag" - increased air resistance contributing to higher fuel consumption and howling noise during high speed cruising (let's say above 60 km/h or 40 mph)?

Are there any disadvantages to engine performance?

Any operational risks?

Is there a significant risk of getting the snorkel head tangled up in branches and ripping it off?

And lastly, what are the things to be beware of on low quality snorkels (for example flimsy fittings perhaps)?

Would a snorkel effectively provide a colder air intake, thus slightly increasing engine's power output?

Personally I refuse to drive through water above the bottom of the wheel rims and in the UK it's never dry enough for long enough to make dust a significant problem so for me a snorkel is not on the options list.

I have mine turned around towards the drivers window to get the full induction roar

Its there because I do sometimes go through water over the bonnet. Fuel consumption is hard to tell because of the other stuff on it. The head gets caught on low branches if the correct way around (replaceable part). Mine is the long side version with JIMNY moulded into it. Stands up to abuse pretty well. Careful fitting and the template are the key.

EDIT: Forgot to say, its pointless without full diff gearbox and transfer box breather kit as well (other than for the noise ;-) )

In my opinion they are only worthwhile if you drive through water deeper than the top of the tyres. There is no performance benefit. Based on my experience driving in the outback they increase the amount of dust sucked in, not reduce it (unless you fit a cyclonic separator on the top). There will be a small increase in aerodynamic drag, but I don't think it is significant. They snag on branches.

Biggest risk is you have to turn the heating up in the car.... because you'll be looking much cooler B)
I'll freely admit mine was done more for looks than effects.
Only downside - intake noise at high revs (but some see that as a plus)

On a side note, as of yesterday the jimny is my wife's car as I've picked a new one of these up
My heart belongs to the wee jimny though, but higher mileage I do now means need for a bigger car (3.2L !!)
