Going keyless? was created by Lambert
Hi, so my ignition tumbler is very occasionally being a little bit sticky. The simple answer is to replace with a new one, simple but not straightforward.
So given that it is supposed to be a bit of a faff, I have been wondering if anyone has successfully gone to keyless start? Being a 2011 we are already on remote access so i was thinking that the key could still reside in the tumbler to keep the immobiliser quiet, then use a multi position rotary switch on the dash to get off, accessories and run and then some sort of jewel like push button for start? I am of course assuming that the ecu doesn't have feedback on the ignition tumbler to know that I have redirected it above and beyond the immobiliser detecting the key? What do we think?

Just repair it Lambert.....it's only an ignition switch
You could get a keyless kit off ebay and go that route.....I considered it and cancelled the thought due to reliability concerns.

It's not even the switch its just the tumbler and it is only stuck twice. Lubrication is the first alternative. I was just an idea.

What about contacting a locksmith to see how much to repair the existing lock, if possible?
Keyless go cars are apparently easy to steal... not to mention what the insurance would say to your proposed conversion.

I have a locksmith I trust so that is an option but changing the tumbler isn't technically difficult just awkward apparently.

Actually does anyone know if the door lock tumbler is compatible with the ignition one as in could I just swap an almost unused door one into the ignition and save money on getting a new one matched to the key?

There is a signal from the switch to the ECU to tell it when its in start mode.
