2017 road tax rates

This will kill NEW Jimnys from 2017 onwards.
The Jimny will be £500 the first year then £140 every year afterwards.
Anyone thinking of a new car of any sort better buy it before 1st April 2017 as most small cars will be £140 per year.
Existing cars will continue with the current rates.

It's a bit harsh for a little motor but it is only for the first year. We would need a dealer who would tax the car as part of the deal.

Hi I cant really see a problem ,my 51 plate jimny is £260 per year, were do you get the tax at £140 or is your jimny older. after paying the first £500 it reduces , unlike the range rover that stays at £500 per year.

If you look at the link it's for NEW cars after 1st April 2017 nothing to do with existing cars.
The Jimny emissions are 162g which puts it at £500 for the first year but after that reduces to £140.
If you look at most small average cars after the first year they will ALL pay £140 so the days of cheap or zero tax will be gone.
A small car will now pay the same as a range rover or large 4x4 AFTER the first year.

All EXISTING cars will stay at the same rate.

The point I was making is that people will think twice about buying a new Jimny when they find out a 1300cc car is going to cost £500 the first year.

The Jimny will soon be getting replaced so won't
be available anyway lol

The RR will cost £450 a year from year 2 to year 6 because the list price is over £40k, a small car costing less than £40k will cost £140 from year 2.

I'm a bit out of touch but what is the biggest (engine and/or body) 4x4 I can get (new) at under £40k??
One thing that has in the past put me off bigger engined cars was the road rent but now I am seeing myself in something bigger.....................if I buy new which is very very unlikely.

I was only using the rangerover as an example as I have absolutely no idea how much one costs and am unlikely ever to buy one.
Even a new Jimny is out of reach lol
I'm sure anyone can do some research and come up with a sub 40k large car or 4x4 that would fall in to the £140 bracket the same as small cars.
As Helijohn says I have often considered something larger even a grand vitara but road tax killed that lol

You can get a Landcruiser for £36,000 or a Discovery Sport for just over £30,000. I think a Discovery Commercial still comes in at just under £40,000 if you are happy with just having 2 seats.

But that's irrelevant. The tax is such a small part of buying an expensive new car that it won't change any one's buying habits. However at the Jimny end of the market it's a big deal.

Exactly it'll be a few years down the line when these larger cars become available at low s/hand prices and that is when it'll be worth considering.
I can foresee a rush for small new cars before the changeover.

I'm already looking to the future in a few years time. Three years old and used with £140 a year tax, bring it on.
