alternator squealing was created by Decklandpt
hi guys, need a bit of advice.
my jimny sometimes squeals like mad. happens everytime just after i turn on the engine, within one or two minutes of doing so.
i start it in the parking lot, drive it over to the tool gate, like, 100 meters, and as soon as i stop to wait for it to open, it starts to squeal. i then hit the accelerator (in idle) and as soon as it hits just above 3000rpm it stops and doesn't happen again until the next time i start the engine after a while parked.
the first times it happened i felt a bit of a bunt rubber smell, but not anymore.
had a small battery, the previous owner ran a 30ah 300a battery instead of a 45ah.
i figured it was the small and old battery that was putting some strain on the alternator so i changed it. still, no luck
yesterday i decided to open the bonnet and see where the squeal was comming from. turned on the engine, turned everything on, heater, lights, wipers, demister, the lot, and sure as shit, it started to make some noise.
turnes out it's comming from the alternator.
it's a grinding noise, like a bust bearing, maybe the moisture from the cold nights makes it squeal in the morning.
so, question time... is it possible to mend the alternator, or do i need a new one?
i've read about the vitara v6 alternator upgrade... is it plug and play or do i need to change something else?
thanks

Which engine is it? If its the dual cam m13 a It generally means the crankshaft pulley is on the way out but check the belts first.

yeah, that's the part he means

in my case, i'm not sure that's the culprit... the car is a late 2000 with 70k miles on it.
looking at the belts with the engine working, i don't see anything out of axis or strange vibrations on the belts. all i can determine is a grinding noise coming from the alternator.
gets worse when i sap power, by using the windows or lights, for example.
it is a m13a, and yeah, i know about the crank puley issue... is there any other telltale sign related to the pulley? i do notice that when first firing up, it does so with a thud, like, as if something was slightly out of position and caused some resistance. but it has always done that and it never got worse..

Close inspection of the rubber connecting the inner and outer rims will help. In some cases the pulleys fall apart but in my daughters case there were just tiny cracks in the rubber that caused two belts to give up the ghost. Since replacing the pulley all is well!

Change the belt and set the tension right and see if that fixes it. The belt is likely due replacement anyway. Do the other belt while you're at it.

Mine was doing exactly what you describe. I took the alternator belt off and ran the engine and the squeal went away.

So looked closer at the alternator and found the adjuster bar was cracked and this had caused the alternator to run on a slight angle. Replaced the bar and for a month no noise - eventually it came back as the alternator bearing had given out!!

Got a replacement alternator from James (j999pre) no more squeaking :)

Does your engine bay appear to have developed black dandruff? With the alternator running on worn a bearing the pulley will wobble and the belt rubs on the sides creating lots of tiny burnt rubber dust!
