Kingpin bearings part 2.

It took me all morning to clean everything up, the hub was rusty near the swivel seal, so the face was completely de-rusted and cleaned. I also cleaned out the kingpin holders and cleaned all of the threads to make sure it comes apart again.

The only real problem with the rebuild, getting the bearing otters to go in the swivel, a bit of wet and dry, lots of copper grease and my largest hammer eventually persuaded them to go in. The circlip wasn’t easy to get on, the drive shaft didn’t come far enough through the bearing, so had to use a puller on the shaft.

The rest was straight forward, it just took most of the afternoon, but at least I know it is done well.

The test drive, no wobble in the steering wheel at all at 48-50mph, a slight wobble at 55mph, but only noticeable if you take your hands off the wheel, so all in all very pleasing.

My guess is the other side will need doing soon, but at least I know what to expect, everything will be seized.

Before the hub came off

All I can say is I wish I had known. Everything apart from the ABS bolt everything was reusable and I found a stainless bolt for that, but when I do the other side (it’s bound to go as well) I will definitely get one of these kits, so much easier than wire brushing and cleaning old bolts.

Thanks for the link and I recommend anyone doing this to buy new bolts as well as the large swivel seal, it’s not worth all the effort just to refit old stuff.

Hi Lambert to be honest it was almost an impulse buy , we looked around but the prices are going up all the time ....this one was on eBay with no reserve set , so took a punt as it has 11months test , welding done etc ..
Put in a bid of 2 grand and won the bids for less ...
Went to collect it ....yep the welding has been done basically a whole new rear panel , wax oiled , new rear silencer ,half leather , with wood trim kinda executive model.
Even got £50 off my winning bid for a couple bits the seller hadn't noticed .!
No wobble on M62 in that wind yesterday , even stayed at 60 ish mph on windy hill past little house on the prairie.
Even got almost new AT tyres .. Oh and 4 speakers as standard
Up to now can't believe my luck!

Cleaned the front seat belts by soaking them in a bucket of soapy water for 30 minutes and cleaned the crud off the top bracket.

Finally a quick spray of PTFE and now they go back on the reels something like automatic when you take them off rather than ending up trapped in the door.

Today I have mostly been recentering the steering wheel and cleaning the gunge out of the washer bottle.
