I would have loved to go to the bigjimny meet, but it was just a bit too far for me. Looked good from all the pics ive been seeing so maybe a more northern meet for next year?!

Finally got round to fitting something i bought ages ago for the grey one, but on Ulysses of course.



A small ARB air tank to act as a reservoir for the airline socket. Previously I just had the airline socket straight off the small locker manifold, which worked but was only good for blowing up tyres. Now with the air tank I can run small air tools as well. Another bonus is the airline socket is now on the back bumper so much easier to get at than under the bonnet. I have added a small 12v air solenoid to enable me to isolate the tank/airline socket incase of pipe/tank damage, but also to stop the compressor charging up the tank when im driving and using lockers.

Suspension upgrade this afternoon (bit of an understatement ~ see below).

When I built Ulysses I was using up spares from the grey one (now sold). One of these was a Trailmaster + 2" spring/shock lift, lightly refurbd'. It served the purpose and got me moving, but the tyres were catching a bit and it was over loaded at the front with the weight of the cage, bumper and winch all there (as well as the usual body and engine).

I had bought some used Fox racing front shocks from TomDK a while ago and it took ages to sort out a nitrogen bottle, regulator, hose and valve to fit. Eventually got it all together (at some cost as well). Fox shocks built up and charged with 200psi of nitrogen and castrol 5w fork oil (local bike shop was cheaper than amazon for that ~ £12/litre). Then it was a bit of waiting for funds to replace the springs and some bump stops.

Having sold the grey Jimny I have splashed out a bit and got some new Jimnybits +3" springs front & rear set and a pair of Terrafirma air bumps for the front. Not bad to fit either. Bit of basic drilling and cutting...

First job is to take it all to bits. Springs/shocks off/out and make sure the chassis is supported properly.


Cut off the old bump stop bracket level at where the rubber spring seat bottom is


Use a 52mm holesaw to drill up inside and through the spring seat bracket (note - I bought a brand new starret holesaw for this and it was knackered after one hole, so buy two or something better. This is also why its a 54mm in the pic)




next to put the bump stop in. It comes with 2 locking collars and a large spacer collar. I needed it fairly long to suit the Fox shocks, but had to fit it on its minimum setting to allow the spring to slide over, then lower it once the spring was seated properly. Not too bad to fit.


slid the poly spring seat/spacer thing onto it and its a great fit


Spring over it now and the shock mounted. Looks pretty cool


Need to sort out some sort of mounting bracket for the shock reservoirs now. For now ive used large tie wraps to strap them to the chassis out the way of tyres.

Nevermind. Test run out down the coast on my usual short test route and its amazing. The shocks are soo much better suited to the weight. Much more controllable as well. Very impressed.

I did actually get the rear springs put in as well, but forgot to take any pics of that. Its sitting much more level now so result all round (including tyres not catching! ). Makes me want some rear Fox shocks to match now

I should say; in that last pic there were 4 20kg bags of floor screed in the pickup bed to represent load conditions

So it would be nice to stop the shock wave so to speak
