Wonder what the offspring of these two Jimnys would be then? :silly:

More spannering today.

Got the inlet manifold pulled off the donor M13 and had a bit of a measure up with the gasket.

M13 gasket on M18 head:

Its a perfect match to the port size and shape. Hmm

On the Jimny manifold its a lot of difference. Jimny is way smaller:

For comparison here it is on the M16 swift manifold, sadly no use in a Jimny:

anyhow, thats for another day to worry about air in/out issues. Manifold fitted with some yellow injectors (for a 1.8 mazda MX5 actually):

Strip down the engine bay. Radiator is a mess so will order a new one.

Engine out:

Bit of a clean up and paint the bits not normally accessible with some buzzweld CIO:

Then lunch time. After lunch it was having a look at the troublesome A/C compressor. The clutch mechanism was stuck on with rust. Managed to remove the clutch plate and cleaned it all up. Stuck back together and still the same, so pinched some shims from another I had lying about and popped them in. Works a treat now, cost £0 :-)

Then it was in with the new engine. Bit of a fight and sweat with getting it back onto the gearbox and bolted down. Hoses and wires reconnected at the back mostly, just reverse light switch and some tidying of wiring loom.
Started putting the front back together and noticed the power steering and a/c belt is now too short (due to retaining the liana crank pulley). Alternator and water pump is the same thankfully. So need to order a radiator and a longer belt. not bad really. Maybe 3hrs or so work and it'll be running :-)

Thankyou.

No its the first time Ive spray painted anything (except rattle cans). I bought the proper upol adjustable nozzle gun as well, which helps I think. Watched lots of youtube vids and had a go. There are areas that aint perfect, but overall its a great finish :-)

Other news...

None. Still awaiting the new radiator and belt. Belt ordered was a 4pk975 after measuring it with a bit of string  . We will see if its the right one tomorrow hopefully...

The belt turned up today. Popped it on and its OK, but a bit tight. The belt tensioner (smiley-face pulley) is right at its minimum setting, which I guess gives it room for adjustment after the belt has worn in a bit. Ideally another 5mm would be best, so a 4pk980 belt ideally. However its on and snug so will suffice.

Still awaiting the radiator. Soo tempted to bung the old one on for now and get it going!

Patience is a virtue. Don't kill the new engine for the sake of waiting a couple of days!

Nice new radiator arrived today. £36 ebay special. fits well...

So after fitting that, filling with oil and coolant, double checking all is plugged in and fitted tight it was time to crank by hand first (to get oil moving about the engine) then onto the first try by key:

As you can hear its not running well and there was a worrying knocking noise. Loads of smoke from exhaust so theres unburnt fuel getting dumped in there somehow.

Cleared the air and another go:

No better so swapped out the coil packs and a third go:

Still no good. Had enough for today (been a long hot day), so shower time and think about it a bit more. Next move is to pull the plugs out and see which one isnt sparking, then try to see why

That doesn't sound healthy. It's a new engine though so there can't be too much seriously wrong, bad plug, bad connector? I'm sure something obvious will present itself on closer inspection.

Soo... checked out all the plugs and coil packs one at a time and they are all working.

Code reader (should have thought of that first!). Shows code P0011:

Going to try and swap the crank sensor tomorrow. If not that then its probably the trigger wheel, so engine back out time

Also have oil leaking from this thingy:

Which is something to do with the VVT apparently. Have spares and its not too bad to get to thankfully (easier than the crank sensor at least!)

Its ALIVE!

The relief is amazing :-)

The vvt thingy on the front swapped and that cleared the code P0011. Tried swapping the crank and cam sensors, still not working. Went to town and bought a compression tester and timing light, both showed ok. Last thing to try was the fuel therefore. I had fitted the larger injectors and after swapping back to the standard 1.3 ones its all happy days.

Quick test drive around the village and its defo got a load more torque and power. The safari tuff clutch is good as well, a bit snappier but ideal.
