Anyone thinking of buying a brand new car you have just under 1 month to get one or a pre registered or ex demo to avoid paying the new much higher tax rates.
I believe a new Jimny will be £500 for the first year then £140 per year after that.

Large new cars/diesels will be dead especially a few years down the line in the s/hand market.
The govt. have lost so much money on the existing scheme they have said they need to raise tax to repair the roads.
Wait a minute wasn't that what road tax was originally for till they changed it to VED???
I've always said if everyone changed over to electric cars do you think that road tax would still be free??

Thats why we got our new Ignis when we did £20.00 a year ;) at the moment!!

we was going to get an all black one but the waiting time was about 8 weeks and they couldn't guarantee that so it could have trickled into April

And now an ignis will have the same road tax as a 4 litre audi as long as it's under £40000.

It also makes it expensive for hybrids yet fully electric cars pay no tax .... so they must not make any potholes then

Why didn't they simply scrap this incredibly complex stupid tax and simply put more duty on petrol.. so uneconomical and more milage users pay more, at least it means they'd get some income from those 10% of untaxed vehicles running around tyneside.

Strange how none of the tax paid to use a car on the roads goes toward the upkeep of said roads......A pedal cyclist contributes as much to the roads as any other road user...Poll tax, council tax, community charge pays the road bill.......gov't obviously decided that the bs emissions tax wasn't netting them enough to waste.....back to robbing/business as usual for them.

Yes but the first year will cost £500 as it's 162 g on emissions:ohmy:

so 10 yrs road tax on current tax rates 10x £210 = £2100
10yrs on new tax rate 9 x £ 140 + £500 first year = £1760
Slight saving but that £500 extra when buying a new Jimny might make a difference as you'll either need to find the cash or pay the road tax on instalments.
The break even point is 5yrs so a new owner might want to sell it after 3 yrs and lose compared with tax rates now.
Suzuki should really be pushing the older cars or pre registering them.

This is going to sound really arrogant. Motoring is privilege not a right, it carries a significant fiscal burden. If this burden is too great an individual has a choice, no one has a gun to the head when they opt in to vehicle ownership. I am of limited means so as cars and driving are massively important to me I make sacrifices elsewhere, I don't drink or smoke or go out round town on a weekend. I prioritised my life to give me the best return on investment. Yes the government are on the rob , that's not new, but it may yet be beneficial if it slows the number of new cars being sold, that will over time reduce the number on the road which is a good thing.
