Thanks for the info and pics.

I had a good look inside the boot - the wire holds the remains of a rubber washer in place. We have a lot of sand around here, so I have left it as it is. At the moment the joint is well greased and there are no signs of sand, so it seems to be doing the job.

The original boot is inside the metal can, looks like yours has ripped and now looks like a rubber washer.
Someone has fitted an external boot to keep dirt out; likely a good idea as I doubt if you can get a replacement for the original, suzuki probably only sell the complete shaft.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
