Rear driveshaft advice was created by Jimbo in the Jungle
I am confused... the rear driveshaft on my Jimny does not look quite like I expected.
From the manual I was expecting there to be a splined shaft that I can access, but mine has a rubber boot that does not look like it is an original part. When I stick my fingers under the boot I can feel some wire that has been used to fasten something.
Does the splined shaft normally pull apart easily? Any idea what the wire could be 'fixing'?
Thanks,
Jim.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

The transfer box end (front) of the rear driveshaft is a CV joint, you might call it a Rzeppa joint, there are ball bearings in grooves under the rubber boot, the joint can pivot and slide in and out. This needs no maintenance, unless the boot is damaged.
The front diveshaft has a sliding splined joint that needs greasing regularly

It's not on any I've seen, it's a UJ. There's a rubber boot to protect the splines where the rear propshaft splits and to keep the grease in.
We are talking propshafts and Jimnys aren't we? Definitely not a Vitara, Sidekick, Tracker?

It does look like a CV joint at the front end of the driveshaft. The boot is in quite poor condition and probably needs replacing to protect the CV joint. I can't see any splined shaft that I can pull apart.
Inside the boot there is some thick wire that is twisted around the shaft - I'm not sure what it is there for. Around here most things are fixed with a hammer, so I'm not entirely surprised to find it has been 'fixed'.
Just wondering whether to try and fix it now or just put it all back together and hope for the best...

Looks like that is a replacement boot from a front wheel.
Here is what it should look like, sorry about the poor focus, we are surrounded by melting snow so I took it one handed from the side.

Yep, looks like its had a wheel boot fitted. Perhaps its one of those boots from a cheap Ebay Front CV Joint kit that the supplier couldn't explain to me how it fits a Jimny (it doesn't, the Front CVs are internal to the swivel not external as in the kits he was trying to sell)
