Helicoil or Tap

In removing the bull guard & front bumper it was necessary to drill out 2 of the captive nut fittings. Picture attached.
I thought I had used a 5mm drill but in fact had used a 6mm.
2 options are possible a) a 6mm Helicoil or b) tap out for a 8mm fitment.
As it is a captive nut not sure a Helicoil would work?
Opinions please. ThanksĀ

Helicoil will work just fine in a captive nut, you just need the correct length or grind off any portion that may extend beyond the nut.
Drilling out and tapping M8 will also work, but check your replacement bolt will fit / clear any bumper mouldings.
I guess the best is what you have access to.
I would helicoil as I have them, it uses the standard bolt and it's a stronger than the original.

Your other option depending on the state of the remainder of the nut is to grind it flush and use a suitable rivnut if you have them.

Have tried to research the maximum thickness of metal one can install a 6mm rivnut into without success.
Anyone have that information please?
Thanks.

Have fixed a 6mm helicoil on one side fixing but on the other side the hole i drilled does not hold the helicoil.
Lookin at rivnut or going up to 8mm.
Can get a 7mm bolt but not a 7mm tap.

M6 riv-nut will work from 1mm to 4mm with no issuesĀ
The hole size needed is 9mmĀ
If you need m6 riv-nut's I can post you some for price of postageĀ

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

M7x1.0 is a fairly common tap, the bolts usually have an 11mm hex head.
However, if you've had an M6 helicoil come out there isn't enough metal for an M7 thread.
(Don't you have to drill 1/4" for an M6 helicoil? The tapping drill for M7x1.0 is 6.0mm)
I wouldn't be happy tapping M8x1.25 after helicoil tapping at 1.0 tbh, I'd go fine pitch M8x1.0 and pick up on the threads for the helcoil

After much sorting out, delays due to personal reasons and the weather, finally have 6mm fittings both sides. Helicoil one side and Rivnut the other.
Sort out the wiring problem I am having with Powerfuluk.lltd and the front bumper can get fitted.
