It's bolted between the radius arm brackets which are welded to the axle housing and don't move relative to each other. The radius arms can still flex on their bushes as usual.

It's no surprise it's taken a beating. It must catch on every rock, stump, stick, leaf and cigarette end you drive over!

It's not my design, but I figure it's a 6mm arc of steel plate that's welded onto the front pan of the diff to protect the crown wheel from getting knocked by rocks denting the original (thinner by comparison) axle casing...?

Nah, under articulation one radius arm goes up and one goes down, but it would be hampered by an arm-to-arm guard, even if the bushes can still twist... the arms are effectively bolted together...?

It bolts directly to the inner side of the radius arms mounts. So the arms and bushes are in no way affected by the guard.
So no, the arms are not bolted together.

Think of one arm going up, and the other arm going down... now think about bolting something in between them, and again imagine their movement under articulation... one up, one down...
