If you are thinking of fitting an aftermarket air filter, read the following article, it is very interesting and well researched. There are other sites with similar results too. Paper filters are best and that is why they are fitted as standard, to protect the engine from course granules of dust (stone particles) which can destroy the engine.

I looked at the article and then asked a technical adviser in the industry and since then I have only used the best quality paper air filters.
