All,

having found a local mechanic who seems very good, I have asked him to quote to repair the kingpin on the NSF.

He has been quoted £165+VAT by Suzuki for the following items;
2 x Kingpins
2 x hub seals
2 x bearing seals
2 x bearings
1 x 'tractor' seal

I have read elsewhere that the pins themselves rarely need replacing.

Needless to say I am asking for a breakdown of the cost and also whether they will refund any unused parts.

Just seems a lot given the price of repair kits here, albeit we are talking about different items.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Jon.

Thats seems a lot, presumably as its coming from suzuki.

Heres what i would be buying
2x pair of king pin bearings and axle seal (bigjimny) £47.00
2x swivel hub seals £48.00 (approx)
CV grease and hylomar sealant for kingpins approx £10

Thats without postage so add another £5-10.

Kingpins rarely need to be replaced and he should be able to easily source the bearings from his factors or bearing supplier.

How capable are you with the spanners? If you are reasonably confident this is a job easily tackled with basic tools. I had no idea about it and used the very helpful guide on here but i'm quite happy tackling most jobs on cars although i'm not anywhere near being a mechanic.
I can do both side in well under an hour now.

I'd imagine the garage will charge another £100 on top for labour at least, for a morning of your time and some oil under your nails you could save yourself over £160!

That quote doesn't add up as there is a wrong mix of quantities..

2 x Kingpins (you need 2 per axle end so this is a quote for one end)
2 x hub seals (you need 1 per axle end so why quote 2)
2 x bearing seals (you need 1 per axle end so why quote 2)
2 x bearings (you need 2 per axle end so this is a quote for one end)
1 x 'tractor' seal (is this not a duplicate of the "hub seal above???).

I could send him a kit of parts to do one axle end for around £56 all in (inc taxes but guessing at postage).

Thanks All. Very useful. I've confirmed that any parts not used can be returned so I will go through it with him and even though wrong the prices are comparable. Labour is about 100 quid but I just don't have the time, garage or tools to do it myself and it would probably take me 2 days!

Will let you know how it goes. Thanks.
