Hi folks thought i would give myviews on diesel jimny conversions. i have been researching this with a view to doing a conversion on my vehicle, my vehicle is a 2001 m13 engined jimny with 4.16 sj transfer box fitted with 195/15 insa special tracks ,front winch and full roll cage, mpg travelling above 45mph is horrendous, there are no faults with engine all good but in this trim the gearing is 15mph per thousand rpm, thats 3250rpm at 48mph combines with the high rolling resistance of the insa tyres makes for poor economy.the ansewer,i believe is to go diesel combined with a higher ratio diff ratio for more relaxed and economical cruising note. the jimny diesel which uses the renault k9 1.5 dci engine is 65 or 86 hp which can be reliably chipped to 100 hp and has a 3.4 diff ratio rather than about 4.3 i have never driven one but i would hazard a guess that 5th gear on a stndard vehicle would be 20-22mph per 1000rpm option1 is to buy a european jimny 1.5 dci from europe and convert to rhd. now on to options 2 and 3, i have done a lot of research and the best bets seem to be vw1.9 turbo (aaz) engine with added intercooler or the peugeot 1.9td engine both thes engines will give 90hp with mechanical injection system, if you want you can fit later pd or com mon rail engines but will require software deletions and wiring, with the vw engine i would get an acme conversions adaptor and use the vitara primary case(higher 5th amd stronger) rob storr can do mod for prop to sj transfer careand you can retain deep off road gearing by using 4.16 or 5 or 6 to 1 case gears. With the peugeot1.9 you can use the vitara primary case using a motor and diesel adaptorfor the engine match, both engines have suitable baffled sumps and suitable timing covers available for off road use you can then use either a pair of 2nd hand diesel axles or use toyota 70 series axles where you can get 3.5 crown wheel and pinions from usa , i hope this is of interest steve
