Cable throttle? Vvt? Newbie!! was created by Dannyzook
Bit random and also first post so be nice im looking to buy a jimny in next week or so ive been looking around 2002-2006 and i know this is the cross over year. Ive a budget of £3000 and looking for a clean one (fed up of having to weld my hilux) so i have a few questions. It will be used as a second car (weekend toy) but also to commute to work when i go out with friends after work (100mile round trip) so needs to be good on the road to and the lanes i use are veryy basic so will mostly be a tarmac tractor.
1) i understand the pre 2005 has a manual transfer case and also different drive ratios. Im wantin to put some 235/75 tyres on eventually, is the newer one still nice to drive (ie gearing wise) or is the older one better?
2) are they both vvt?
3) are they cable throttle?
4) is it true the later ones have a galv body and wear better to corrosion, im going to underseal when i get it but want the cleanest one i can find as a base to start with.
5) how electronic are they? Im going from an old school hilux and before that a 73 beetle. Hahaa.
Thanks in advance.
Danny.

Ok 235s are about as big as any of them will suffer without needing to adjust the gearing with some kind of altered transfer box. It is possible to go bigger but it starts to sluggish. Depending on early or late trimming will be needed without a lift.
Only post 2005 are available in vvt.
All are cable throttle
They all rot, boot floor, behind the headlights are the most notable but they will go anywhere
Not very electronic but still have an ecu so some kind of code reader isn't a bad thing. By modern day standards they're very simple.
How rude I forgot to say welcome to the forum, silly me.

Thanks for reply
And im toying with either 235 (and a 2 inch lift) or 215’s, think ill gauge it after a month of driving it and how it drives etc.
Code reader now on order!! And ill make sure i check those area’s!!
Thanks for your help
Danny.

No worries. Spend time looking at a good few and get the cleanest standard one you can. You will not regret it.

Welcome to the forum, if it's a tarmac tractor I would go for the 215

VVT jimnys (especially early vvt 2005-onto about 2010) have the R72 gearbox, which is a known baddie. Its also very expensive to fix or replace. Because of that alone I would look for a non VVT M13 engine and stick transfer box combination as being the best starting point (1999-2005 i think). Plus side is earliest ones have cheaper road tax, downside is likely to be more rusty. It is possible to 'convert' a vvt to have the earlier gearbox, transfer box and diffs, but having done that I can say its a lot of work!
235 tyres with the m13 engine will be slow and pants off road. 215 is the best compromise for standard gearing.
Welcome along also

Thanks for the great replys guys! And wow those 215’s look great!!
Think i am going to go for 215’s as although i will take it off road itll only be average lanes (nothing like i have seen on pay and play days and in the hilux i usually stick to the easy parts although that is on 31’s)
See my biggest fear with these is rust as im kinda chasing my tail with my current and past (toy) vehicles and i kinda preffer the interior of the 2005- ones hahaa.
Thanks for the heads up about the r72 gearbox, ive done some quick research and it seams to be bearing failure and the bearings they use dont help? Im a mechanical engineer and have access to press’s, lathes, proper bearing pullers etc and all kind of other things so im half tempted to still go for a 2005- and just rebuild the box if i ever notice it sounding abit rough. Ive seen many 2005- with 80k on the clock and no mention of a gbox failure so its not like id be doing it every year?
The transfer case being electic buttony thing, how does it work? Is just an electric motor that does the shifting?
On another note the tax and insurance is cheaper in any senario so im happy hahaha.

I have the R72. Regular changes with good quality oil and mine is ok at 75K (fingers crossed)

The issue with the r72 boxes is a faulty seal. If it fails you need to rebuild the box but once it's rebuilt I'm pretty sure that's it, cured forever.

Ditto 1066. My VVT is on 110k. Other than a bit of a sticky reverse when cold gearbox functions fine, I think they are hit and miss, if you get a good one or one that has been fixed you should be fine. Personally I preferred the VVT, smoother more refined motor with a pleasant power band, that being said, the non-vvt I've driven was a Greek rental on its last legs.
