Setting up my winch was created by tim_jimny53
Hi all

Have recently purchased a new winch for my jimny....how should I set the battery up ?

Planning on buying a bigger battery to power the lot rather than run a twin battery set up

Any info would be great

Thanks

What info do you need?

If you buy a new winch it usually comes with all cables, wires and such-

You mean Optima right?

Both Yellow top and red top works great with winching.
Some speculate that the Yellow top is more suited for winching as it's a deep cycle battery and the red top is a starter battery.

But a winch motor is very much like a starter battery and works great with a red top, as the red top delivers plenty of CCA's and is easily charged. So if you've a good deal on a red top Optima, got for it.

What winch?
You're probably just a good going with a cheaper Varta AGM battery or similar.

Awesome winch. Don't come much better than that for budget winches :)

Just use the cables that comes with the winch and follow the instructions.
A good AGM battery with more than 700 CCA's will do :)

Don't forget to install a battery isolator on the winch, to prevent unauthorised use and to switch it off in the event of a solenoid failing

I was at a land rover show a few years ago and as I was leaving I watched a tragedy unfold. Some clown had decided to sneak along between the rows of cars parked nose to tail and had unspooled the winch of a defender and fed it round the exhaust system of the full fat year old range rover the defender was behind. Because you wouldn't expect that the defender owner had just jumped in and set off backwards, as you can imagine an exhaust system not a strong or robust thing to have a defender snatch tighr against. Did an awful lot of damage, fortunately for the defender owner there were a few of us that witnessed that he didn't set the winch himself before reversing off, not that that was much help to the range rover owner. If you can at all hide or completely relocate the free spool mechanism do so, also consider running an eye end instead of a hook?

There were a couple of incidents like that a few years ago. Where the solenoid is exposed passing idiots spooled out the steel cable, passed it over the roof of the 4x4 and attached it to the back. Then by jamming the screwdriver across the solenoid the winch pulled the cable in which started to cut the 4x4 in half. Therefore it is advised to have a heavy duty cutoff switch on the power cable to the solenoid. This also protects in case of a collision where you would have exposed high current terminals on the front. Some competitions/events insist on this isolator anyway.

To stop anyone operating the free spool clutch, hook the winch line onto a front recover point etc and wind the slack in making the cable taught, this prevents the free spool clutch being operate and then isolate the power to the winch

I wouldn't recommend doing something like that. It puts an unnecessary load on the winch when stationary. And most people tend to forget all about it leaving the winch like that for weeks or months.

But an isolator switch is always a good idea.
