To Slick 50 or not Slick 50 was created by MrJinx
Hi peeps
Im thinking of putting Slick 50 or some other similar product in the engine and gearbox.
Anybody got any thoughts good or bad? will it affect the transfer box 4wd stuff etc?
Apologies as im not particularly mechanically advanced and just want longevity from my Jimny!

Thanks

What makes you think it needs it for longevity? What sort of longevity are you anticipating? Aside from early VVTs, the gearboxes give no trouble with many Jimnys doing over 160,000 miles. The only mechanical issue you may have with the transfer case is chain stretch. I stretched the chain in my last Jimny but that was with a 1.6 and doing lots of towing. I've not heard of any issues with chain stretch in the post 2005 transfer cases and I don't think some slippery juice can help with that anyway.

Changing the oil every 50,000 miles or so is all you need to do.

Peachy!
I have always used it in the engines of my other cars and it has generally quietened the engine down and given a few more MPG as a bonus. just wondered if any of the other peeps had used it before?
Thanks again BJ

I'd rather change oils annually than rely on aditives.

I used to use it back in the 90s when I was mostly carburettor powered but even then it was debatable if it wasn't snake oil that was too good to be true. Nowadays with modern high tolerance engines and high performance oils it is not a consideration for me.

Omg no.. dont put any of that crap near your engine.. oil company's invest billions in developing their oils. How do you think a small company operating out of some industrial unit can produce something better?
Slick 50 have been sued many times for causing the destruction of engines !
Even nasa and dupont (inventor of teflon) tested the stuff and concluded there is zero benefit of using a product such as slick 50.
The problem back then was that the slick 50 molecules were bigger than the holes in the oil filter, so clogged it up.

I put some in my Triumph Spitfire back in the 80s, and I'm sure that it caused the engine to wear out much faster. I found out much later that it undoubtedly blocked the oil filter and starved the bearings of oil.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

The only additive that you could possibly need for a car is octane booster or lead for older... but for fuel and oil stick with what the manufacturers say and save yourself some money !
My normal diesel car is approching 300,000 miles yet to drive it you would think its only done 30,000. And thats with 10 years of very short journeys and general abuse... So why would you ever need an additive to "prolong" the vehicles life?
