Tell me about the rope you are using.

Since I laid up the Jimny in 2011 most off-road sites have banned wire rope, therefore I am looking at plasma/dyneema style solutions. Clearly the sky seems to be the limit in terms of how much you can pay, what are people using?

these look to be competitively priced? www.electricwinchshop.co.uk/12mmblacksynthetic.html

Can't really be much help as on the 2 occasions I have used a winch both were fitted with dyneema and both were uneventful. It may be you get what you pay for with dyneema i just don't have a frame of reference.

I had the 11mm from them on my SJ. It came in several colours so you could colour code to your car. Mine was black though. :)

And the next question that I recall another forum debating ad infinitum in the past.....

Neat or untidy?

With steel I spooled it on in neat coils. I recall some conversation that suggested that plasma style rope should be untidy to stop it jamming itself when under tension?

Neat and tidy! Otherwise the bit under tension can slip through the coiled rope on the drum (if untidy) and cause it to jam...

Speaking from experience ;)

Dyneema is the name of the synthetic plastic which was discovered around 1968 by accident.
20 years later they were manufacturing it as rope.
Dyneema claims to be the strongest synthetic rope on the market.
A 3mm dyneema cord has a breaking strain of 1500 kgs !
The chinese also make "dyneema" but its around 33% weaker than the genuine article..
Eveything is faked nowadays so if you wanted the best then i would only buy it from a proper distributor (ie yacht chandlers)
But all is not lost, my 13,000 lb winch came with 9.5mm fake dyneema.
Last weekend i was winching out a very stuck disco that two landrovers tied together could not drag out..
I had a mitsubishi pickup and another disco tied to the back of me as a ground anchor and still managed to pull me and both of them towards the stuck disco without the fake rope snapping !
I tried a tree first as a ground anchor, around 10" trunk, which i pulled over !!
Synthetic rope is beautiful and soft to handle, very light, floats and no recoil if it does snap !
The only drawback is it cannot be tied as its so slippery any knot will pull out ..so splicing is the only option.
Dont be fooled by the "stronger than steel" claims though as they miss part of the statement out (stronger than steel - for the same weight) think about it !
Another interesting use is soft shackles !
Yes it can jam within itself on the drum, but a quick yank usually frees it.

Dyneema is just a brand of UHMwPE/HMPE which is essentially just Polyethylene. Just like Plasma 12 strand made from Honeywell Spectra Fibre is another brand of rope made from HMPE. But of course both products go through processes to make them stronger.

Also interestingly you mention the whole chinese stuff.. You are very right. It's just not like genuine Dyneema/plasma.
Both links to winch rope above have 11-12 mm rope for around £130 for 30 meters including hook and thimble... Made in china?? yes sir indeed :side:
