As I always say in these threads, I left my manual hubs engaged all the time. A habit I got in to with my SJ before.

I would rather pay a couple of quid for plastic tubing and plastic ties with fiting taking 30 mins or so than forking out a lot more for hubs you have to lock and unlock manually for sure. After all you are a student and so I assume money is tight!

I replace the whole tubing with 4mm silicone vac hose and t pieces for £15.

There's more to failing pipes on the 4wd system as there are seals in the hubs too.
Manual or fixed hubs are my choice of fix as you have to go some to break them.

Thanks for all the advice,
I only envisage using the 4wd if I'm meeting up for mountain rescue to be honest so I've gone for what seems to be the most robust option.
I've got a pair of locking hubs on the way and I'll make a blank for the vacuum line.
