Hi everyone,

My first post here about my first Jimny which I thought was my dream car but after less than three months it's turning out to be a nightmare. I spent £5K on a 55 plate 1.3 automatic hard top from what I thought was a reputable dealer who did a service and MOT on the day I bought it. So far I've had what I think from reading other posts on here was a death wobble which was resolved by getting the wheel balance done. Then brake pad worn out, another £80.00 gone. Then today what has really put me off and makes me feel scared to drive it. I drove for about 20 minutes at 7am this morning, no problem. Then a couple of hours later I started the engine and the whole car felt like someone was rocking the car. I retried three times and then revved the engine up a bit (following a bit of google research) and it stopped rocking and got me home like normal. Back home I checked oil and water, all fine and started it up again fine. I called the garage I bought it off and described what had happened and they said they'd never heard of anything like that happening but they would take a look if I drove it over there but as at that point it seemed to have resolved so I didn't think a three hour round trip was worth it. They said I should ask a mechanic. I left it for a few hours before needing to drive it again and the same thing happened. My partner came out and said it looked like maybe the exhaust was spilling out dirty fumes but it was dark by this point so hard to tell what colour the emissions were. I managed to get it going but about ten minutes into my journey I stalled whilst waiting at a traffic light. I managed to get it going again but it has really shaken me up. I'm going to call my local mechanic in the morning but he is not a 4x4 specialist so if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate your thoughts. I've got about two weeks before my three month warranty runs out so I need to get an idea if I've been sold a really bad car or if this is just simple stuff. I'm a little concerned about what the garage may or may not be telling me as they told me the key fob didn't work to open the car and that was a problem that even Suzuki main dealers couldn't fix. I took it at face value and just used the key in the door the old fashioned way until my mechanic changed the battery and lo and behold we can use the key fob to open the car. That left me a bit red faced, I change people's key fob batteries all the time in the electrical shop where I work!

Apologies for the long post. I'm not mechanically minded myself but anything I can pass on tomorrow to the mechanic would be great. Thank you.

I would start with replacing a couple of the sensors (crank position and idle control?).

Im no expert on the sensors, but thats what it sounds like. relatively cheap thing to fix so perhaps not worth the long drive to your dealer.

Rhinoman on this forum knows loads about these cars electronics, might be worth sending him a PM?

Don't be put off Squibbly! pads, wheel balance and key fob battery I have done to mine and sort of expected it on a used car.

The whole car 'rocking' thing I suspect might be ignition coils. Mine started doing this, check if the revs drop when this happens. I bought a crankshaft sensor as Riccy said this can cause this erratic idling but it turned out to be my ignition coils. I replaced them and this shaking, revs dropping and power loss went away.

In hind-sight I should have guessed it was the coils as my HT leads were worn then it was likely the ignition coils were too. I believe the heat from the top of the engine over years will damage them.

let us now how you get on.

Thank you for your replies - feeling a little more positive that maybe the entire engine isn't on it's way out!
Will pass your thoughts onto my mechanic later and let you know what the outcome is.

Wobble car update.

Nothing showed up on diagnostics but I passed on the forums thoughts to my mechanics. So far we have discovered the spark plugs were not the right ones so those have been replaced. The ignition coils have been replaced. We were going to replace the temperature sensor but the parts suppliers sent the wrong one so not changed them at the moment.

In an unrelated incident, the alternator went, managed to get the garage I had it off to pay half but goodness me please remind me how reliable these cars are?!

Big test will be when it goes cold as that was what was noticeable about when the problem was happening. My car is called Boudicca, she was meant to be my dream car but we're barely talking to each other at the moment!
