dash illumination? was created by pegasus
Just bought a 2008 Jimny jlx plus. I'm finding the dash illumination very poor/non-existent unless the headlights are switched on. Is this normal? I thought there might be some additional switch to alter them, but doesn't seem to be anything. I've checked in the manual but the only adjustment is via the little stick thing, which does alter the settings but only when the headlights are on. It seems very murky and not that easy to read the clocks quickly when you're driving. Can anyone offer any advice. Thanks.

Been meaning to post on this subject for some time. The very faint instrument markings is my only Jimny hate. Bad enough to see in normal daylight and totally impossible to see when wearing sunglasses. It's bad enough to stop me buying a replacement Jim in the future. Might try the LED's mentioned but not too happy about having to keep the lights on all of the time.

I checked out the bulbs mentioned on Ebay but they didn't seem to be listed for the Jimny (or at least, not my year). I've spoken to both the local Suzuki dealer and my local car spares shop. Both advise they you can't get upgrade dash bulbs. I always used to keep the headlights on on my BMW, just to be better seen, so not bothered about that. It's just that, even with the dash illumination cranked up to its highest setting, it's still pretty pathetic! It's a bit hard to get used to as the BMW had everything lit up in very easy to read orange led. I'm surprised at Suzuki. My partner has a Grand Vitara and the dash lights are fine on that. I would have thought Suzuki would have rectified this matter by now.

Just Googled it again and this has come up. Have checked compatibility and appears ok. Does anyone know how long it takes to change them? Also, is there one bulb for each clock - ie rev counter and speedo? What about the little temp and fuel gauge ones? Thanks!

They are Zaltar 580.

I looked at this issue on my 2010 Jimny. Pulled the dash out, wiggled the back black plastic cover off (someone has been there before!) and saw four grey plastic units with covers which I assumed were covers over the bulbs. I managed to unclip the cover on one - BUT its the cover over the gauge mechanisms!!!! (Sorry I did not get a pic with the cover off).
Bugga! Then I noticed the speedo tacho gauges were not at zero. I've stuffed it I thought :S
but when you repower the gauges, they do a dance and go back to zero, so I was relieved.
I decided that the green circuit board probably had LED's embedded not replaceable bulbs so I gave up.

I got a piece or 12V LED strip from a roll I had, and used a resistor to cut the brightness, then wedged it in below the black plastic cover that sits in front of the actual dash unit. Not noticeable yet gives some light to the dash.

Would like to try white dials like my Astra has, much better to see in the daylight, but not sure if anyone can do that sort of modification at reasonable cost.
