Speakers in side doors of Jimny 3

Has anyone installed speakers in side doors of Jimny 3?

I noticed that there is a hole in the lower front part of the inner side door panel. The diameter of the hole is around 10 cm and the space behind the hole (in the door cavity) is about 5 cm deep (I need to precisely measure these dimensions again).

Anyway, I think that a 4" (10 cm) speaker should fit in this hole nicely.

However, a corresponding hole would have to be cut out in the the plastic inner side door trim card, and then covered adequately with some kind of meshed cover. I doubt that it would look professional.

Has anyone done this? Would it even make sense considering that the front speakers are already located just about 30 cm more upfront in the side body cavity between the side door and the front wheel arch?

Also, it appears that the hole in the door trim card would partially overlap with the big lower pocket in the trim card, thus partially ruining the pocket.

Interesting idea. I've been looking into improving the sound system myself recently. Would you be running these in unison with the factory fitted ones?

The setup I'm leaning towards is to upgrade the existing speakers for some better quality ones and adding some tweeters to the A-pillars. My reasoning is that I suspect the muddy sound from the stock setup is partly due to the speakers themselves and partly to do with their positioning. Adding some tweeters at head level should hopefully improve the staging considerably.

I've not actually tried this yet so take all that with a good pinch of salt.

I haven't had the door cards off recently enough to remember the holes you mean but if you're sufficiently crafty I can't see it being too difficult to french in a set of speaker grilles and have them look something like reasonable. Also if the holes in the steel are 100mm then I would be looking for a speaker with a driver magnet around the 90mm mark and with the much larger cone that will surface mount on the card with some support through to the door and have some volume available. As for the door pocket it can be easily moulded in using something like milliput which is an epoxy putty used in model making. A bit of thought and skill and you're away.

Think i saw someone make a baffle of MDF sheet or plywood to cover the complete area for the pocket for a speaker. Covered it with speaker cloth or fabric..
I have been thinking about doing the same as my ebay speakers blew so now they sound awful. And my subwoofer under the seat also blew so it just made nasty noises and no boom..
Good speakers is my next investment.

If your changing speaker I would recommend some tweeters on the dash sounds so much better :)

I think at some point I shall look to replace my speakers again with the best quality I can find to fit in the standard location and in the standard size but with tweeters as mentioned above and some top quality rear speakers, likely in the standard size in the standard rear location.

The trouble is that the audi specialist I used over the years closed down 5 years ago I found out when I text him to enquire about parking sensors for the Mrs new car. I've found another my parents have used for alarms and will ask their advice when I take the Mrs car in.

I'm guessing that you need crossovers for tweeters? Again, I'll ask when I'm in there. The quality of the speakers seems paramount. I've put bigger Pioneer speakers in to replace the Edge speakers Halfords sell but both sound rubbish. I put Alphasonics in my old Jimny and swapped them out of it to it's current owners new Jimny for her recently and they're ok, not amazing but that's due to their size and location.

Yes a good set of quality composite speakers will do the trick, they come with the cross over and sound great I installed slightly larger ones in the front and used the cheap plastic spacers and cut them up to make them fit because I think there is something in the way to fit a hole space in complete but it was a few years ago I installed them now.
