If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Then the flashing light is telling you that it can't produce a vacuum in the pipes leading to the hubs, so the hubs cannot engage. The 4x4 is working as far as the axle though.

The usual fix is to swap the hubs for manually engaged ones, and then plug the pipes, or short out the pressure switch so the light works.

However, check for broken/disconnected rubber pipes leading to the hubs, from the chassis to the suspension arm and from the manifold to the tank under the driver side front wing.
The steel pipe across the axle and the pipes along the suspension arm are prone to rust.

Otherwise it could be a wheel bearing gone, as the bearing has to seal for the vacuum system to work.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Definitely check wheel bearings first. There's no point spending money on manual hubs if the vacuum system is not at fault.
