Gap between rear bump stop and axle? was created by NineCherries
Folks. If anyone is under their car could they have a look and let me know how far off the axle is to the bump stop please. I can just get a finger between the rubber tip and the plate. Approx 20mm

My car is horrible to drive just now, almost floaty and I’ve been checking a few things that had been suggested on another post I made in the technical section. I was just under for a quick look and nothing “looks” wrong, I’ve tried with a pry bar to inspect the bushes for play on the front and the rear and nothing appears sloppy.

New standard height Monroe suspension fitted last autumn, car has done 65000 (it’s a 2008)

I do have a tow bar and a sub in the boot but the rear does seem to have sagged, no broken coils either.

So if any one could confirm if this is normal or not it would be appreciated.

Tony.

Ermintrude has about 50mm between the bump stop and the axle on her road springs and about 30mm on the track springs. Yours sounds very low, doesn't have extension pieces does ?

check the spring mounts haven't come away from the chassis. Another candidate for inspection is the panhard rod, which keeps the axle from moving left to right.

It sounds like broken springs, but you say they are new. A test would be to stand beside it and rock the car a little. It should rock, rather than wollow. Any movement left to right without altering the angle is either springs or panhard.

Are your tyres at the correct pressure?

Replied by NineCherries on topic Gap between rear bump stop and axle?
Ricky. New gas struts fitted, still original springs.

Both sides are this low, spring seats look ok but I’ll check again

Old sagging springs?

Lambert Tyre pressures were checked less than a week ago and ok. I am running general grabbers but have been for the last 4 years approx and this feeling has just recently been noticeable.

If the springs are original then yeah it is likely they are most of the problem.

"Floaty" usually means knackered shocks in my experience, but height will/should be goverened by the springs.

IF IT AINT BROKE, KEEP FIXING IT UNTIL IT IS
