More expense. was created by Lambert
Ermintrude decided that a nice gentle family afternoon out for a cup of tea at Rievaulx Abbey was the perfect opportunity to get warm. 107 degrees Celsius warm. The actual dash guage didn't move but she took nearly half a litre of water once in a place of safety. Tried to get home but dared not risk the motorway so got a lift on a flat bed. Fairly certain that one or more of the radiator cap, thermostat or water pump have given up. No water in the oil and no sustained bubbles in the water when running and no codes so no obvious lasting damage. The recovery man thought the same. Arrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On my M13A VVT the thermostat housing, where it goes into the block had badly corroded causing a leak.
Thankfully I didnt attempt the job myself because even my local garage had a major struggle on their hands removing the thermostat housing.
Why am I telling you this? Better to be forewarned; hopefully though, yours is a simpler fix than mine was

Im hopeful that, having being cared for since new, things like that aren't in my immediate future. I know I forget she is 8 now not brand new but its not like she's 15 and been neglected for half her life.

Whomever decided that the thermostat needed to live under the intake manifold is a moron. I have nothing else nice to say so am saying nowt more.

Or alternatively you can spend a lot of choice Anglo Saxon expletives and change the thermostat with the manifold in place. I will not be electing to do that again any time soon unless I'm forced.

Good luck
It might help give you more space to remove the alternator.

Not off but swung down out of the way, gave enough room. Just.

Nicely done.

It's a tough place to have located it - at least it isn't something that fails often.

So all fixed and problem sorted then?

Oh No!

So Lambert I assume from that remark it was the same problem I had?
The garage that did mine said there were plenty in stock at their supplier and had been told this was a common problem (hence the stock); and yet there is not much talk of it in the forums.

Yes - I'd like to meet the clown that designed that

...preferably down a dark alleyway when they are unsuspecting
