Do a bit of shooting etc with dogs , so just looking at a skid plate and set of good tyres ,
You think this would do for driving mostly tracks , fields etc ?
Cheers Jules

Save the money on the skid plate and just try it with decent tyres. It will astound you with where it can get.

I fitted these to my Jimny and they are fantastic, there are no negative effects on the road with them either.

I also made a skid plate from 5mm steel plate,it only cost £20.

Depends what you mean by skid plate.
There are various diff guards, rock-sliders, transfer box guards, fuel tank guards avaliable from a few places, but not a lot for the front bumper area (which is usually referred to as a skid plate).

I use Ermintrude as a substitute quad bike on my hill farm and the only reengineering I have done to the underneath are steel transfer box mounting frames to replace the factory cast aluminium ones. I am not entirely sure it is absolutely necessary, as the box itself is also aluminium so if i hit it on something hard enough instead of just breaking the mount I could potentially damage the box itself which is much more expensive to rectify. This is where paranoia sets in and the entire underneath of the car becomes covered in various steel cradles and guards to the point where the car is so heavy that it's poor little 1.3 can't push it past 50mph. I have not done so, instead I accept that a sense of decorum is needed in driving off road and avoiding obstacles is better than grinding over them.
