The issue of engine identification often comes up on the forum and a common solution is for a picture to be taken and uploaded for someone with the reqiored knowledge to identify it.

May I suggest a simpler approach- The M series engines all have DOHC written on the top of the engine whilst the G series engines all have 16 valve written on top of theirs. Everyone will be able to find this and should therefore be able to identify their engine easily.

Or
If you can see the plug leads and coil packs it's the earlier G13b with a cam belt. If you can't see them, they're under the plastic cover it's the later M13a with a timing chain.

On the 9th day he swapped it for a Jimny.

My point was that to simply read the words on top of the engine requires no prior knowledge.

Great set of photos, now it is very clear.

But which is the best engine, you would assume the VVT, but is it really?

You can find good and rough examples of them all but the vvt is newer and had longer in production than the others so is more numerous and therefore better odds of a good one . Also the vvt is very tractable even at low revs for such a small motor. Ultimately though its the condition of the specific engine and it's service history that is actually important.
